STRIVE, a member of EMPath’s global learning network, has been a national leader in creating pathways to economic opportunity for predominantly low-income Black and Brown communities since 1984. STRIVE provides students of different ages, genders, and races with free comprehensive job training and placement services with the wraparound supports designed to address barriers that often prevent individuals from thriving in the workforce. The organization has a network of 12 cities, directly operating in two of them: their founding site in New York City, and a new site in Atlanta, which opened in 2020.

STRIVE joined EMPath’s network, the Economic Mobility Exchange™, in early 2021. Through this network, a global community of over 140 organizations, EMPath offers resources, support, and trainings and shares our research-backed method for helping people in poverty climb the economic ladder. Exchange members share back their lessons learned and what it takes to adapt best practices locally.

As an organization committed to providing evidence-based work that supports their students’ goals, STRIVE was intrigued by EMPath’s client-centered coaching method, Mobility Mentoring®. As they work to incorporate the model into their programs, STRIVE has found Mobility Mentoring to be a natural addition to their programming, allowing their organization to support participants in achieving goals beyond just their career.

Joining the Exchange has provided STRIVE with “a community where everyone shares the same vision, has the same conversations, and learns together,” says Keren Cadet, Program Director at STRIVE Atlanta. Staff become even better coaches because the network supports their skill-building and goal-setting.

“We believe this model will improve alumni [success] because everyone will set their own goals and receive support from STRIVE and its partners to increase financial resiliency and mobility,” says Lakythia Ferby, Executive Director at STRIVE New York.
